Summer
in Colorado offers something for everyone
Listen closely and you’ll
hear echoes of a familiar refrain from years past: “Are we there
yet?”
Yep, it’s almost summer.
Whether you’re the type who’ll drive from daybreak till lunch to
see the world’s largest ball of twine or your idea of adventure
is a jaunt to the next town, Colorado has a summer of adventure
in store for you.
There’s no reason to be bored, not with hundreds of events to choose
from across the state, including concerts, county fairs, film festivals
and fishing derbies.
If you’ve got a week or a long weekend, you can make the most of
it by using this summer planner. Start with Memorial Day weekend,
which kicks off the summer season for many. If you’re looking for
a traditional treat, head to Craig for Grand Olde West Days and
enjoy a parade, chariot races, antique tractor pull, carnival, chili
cook-off and more.
If you’re looking for something a little different, head to Fort
Garland, where infantry and calvary re-enactors from Colorado and
New Mexico will present drills, living-history demonstrations, games
and stories.
Don’t let gas prices stop you from packing up the family and hitting
the road this summer.
You won’t have to cross a state line — Colorado’s stay-athome summer
is crammed with festivals celebrating classical, bluegrass, jazz,
rock and country music; food from many nations; wine tastings; operas;
living history presentations; military re-enactments; competitions;
bike rallies; and balloon glows.
You name it, it’s here. Some events are worth a day trip, others
a lot more.
Be sure to call before you go. Many events are free; some charge
admission or require tickets.
Events are subject to change. If you need overnight accommodations,
it’s a good idea to get them at least several weeks in advance.
Phone numbers without a designated area code are 719.
